Provincial Health Leadership Program

Leadership takes preparation. This program provides it.

Health systems need good leaders. The Provincial Health Leadership Program (PHLP) has spent more than 15 years helping early and mid-career professionals in Manitoba’s health sciences faculties, government, and healthcare system get ready for those roles.

Participants design a capstone project grounded in their own area of work or influence, build relationships with senior leaders across the province, deepen their understanding of the health system and academic environment, and develop the critical and creative thinking skills that leadership actually requires.

The program runs annually, alternating between in-person and virtual delivery, so that more professionals across Manitoba can participate regardless of where they’re based.

Program Fee

The program fee for the 2026-27 academic year is $CAD 750 plus applicable taxes.

Application Requirements

As part of the application process, you will be asked to:

• Submit a brief (500 word) capstone project proposal;
• Identify one or more potential preceptors whose expertise aligns with your proposed project;
• Upload a current resume or CV; and
• Provide a letter of support from your supervisor.

You are not required to contact potential preceptors in advance. The program team will coordinate outreach on your behalf.

• To provide an understanding of the healthcare system and academic environment through dialogue with current Manitoba health leaders.
• To develop critical, creative, and lateral thinking individuals capable of leading academic and health systems programs.
• To foster organizational growth, learning, and innovation.
• To provide an understanding of principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism in academia and the health system and support a community of health leaders that embrace these principles.

Program Logistics

• Sessions are typically held on Wednesday evenings. Your session delivery may be held in-person or virtually depending on the delivery method PHLP is offering at that time.
• PHLP includes a keynote address. This event is typically held on the final day of the program. Information for the keynote address is provided separately.

Preceptorship

When applying for the program, participants are asked to identify a Manitoba health system or academic leader that they would like to have as their preceptor for the duration of the program. PHLP tries to match participants and preceptors as thoughtfully as possible in order to create and foster a mentorship environment that is valuable to both mentor and mentee. Participants will receive confirmation from the PHLP program coordinator of their assigned preceptor after the program begins.

Program Assignment

Each participant will be assigned a preceptor who will mentor them in the development of a capstone project in an area of leadership relevant to the participant’s workplace or sphere of influence. This capstone project includes the submission of a short write up, typically in the form of a briefing note, due on the final day of the program.

A briefing note is a tool used to inform decision makers about issues for which they are responsible. It is in the form of a short paper that can quickly and effectively break down complex information in a brief, well-structured document.

Lastly, participants are asked to complete a three-minute presentation on their project at the end of the program.
