A workshop is an event that brings together patient/public partners in a creative and collaborative environment that can include sharing perspectives, identifying and prioritizing issues of importance, developing goals and objectives, mapping or evaluating alternatives or commenting on a draft proposal. Patient/public partners break into smaller groups, and work together on designated “assignments” regarding specific decisions about the research process (e.g. research priorities, question, design, outcomes, interpreting data, or dissemination strategies). The “assignments” should have a clear purpose, and can focus on a number of the stages/phases of the research process. Small groups may be facilitated or be designed to be self-facilitated.
Workshops can be useful for:
- Providing an opportunity for patient/public partners to learn through discovery and exchange of knowledge with researchers and other people with lived experience of a health issue(s).
- Obtaining focused insight, which can then be used directly in the decision-making process for the research stage you are tackling.
Note: Make sure to book an accessible space for your workshop. Additionally, make sure workshop assignments are accessible for all patient/public partner abilities - making instructions clear and straightforward, and providing appropriate supporting materials.
