VADA Program Featured in UM Today

The Visual and Automated Disease Analytics (VADA) Program recently marked the graduation of its first master's students. Rayhan Shikder is among the first students to complete the VADA Program including an internship at the iFLYTEK Laboratory for Neural Computing for Machine Learning in Toronto. University of Manitoba partners with Deer Lodge Centre Foundation to improve fall-risk assessment tools

A research collaboration between the University of Manitoba and Deer Lodge Centre aims to improve the tools therapists use to assess falls risk. Dr. Kathryn Sibley, Director of CHI's Knowledge Translation platform and assistant professor in the U of M's department of Community Health Sciences, will lead the project to assess an existing tool called the Mini BESTTest. In January, Sibley and her team will start training physiotherapists at Deer Lodge Centre to conduct the project, which is funded in part by a grant from the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation. Dr. Lisa Lix Named Canada Research Chair

Dr. Lisa Lix, Director of CHI's Data Science platform, has been named Canada Research Chair in Methods for Electronic Health Data Quality. Dr. Lix is one of 10 Canada Research Chairs named at the University of Manitoba, and her research will focus on developing methods enhance and evaluate the quality of electronic health databases.

Congratulations to Data Science's Stephanie Monkman who has received the University of Manitoba’s Indigenous Master’s Excellence Award. This award is given to Canadian Indigenous graduate students enrolled full-time in a Master’s program at the University of Manitoba. Awards are offered to meritorious graduate students who demonstrate significant research ability and scholarly potential.

This is a joint program between the New York Academy of Sciences and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, which recognizes “the world's most promising Early Career Investigators in the fields of cancer, neuroscience and artificial intelligence."

Examining the Implementation of Preoperative Diagnostic Testing Guidelines in Manitoba

In Manitoba, as in other jurisdictions, audits have shown that many patients continue to receive unnecessary preoperative testing despite the existence of a province-wide guideline. In 2015, we undertook a multi-year project to design and implement knowledge translation strategies that we hypothesized would reduce unnecessary preoperative testing.
