Description

Clinical Trials Graduate Course Outline

Monday and Wednesday from 1:00—2:55p.m. (May 7th to June 26th 2018)

Goals and objectives
1. Students will appreciate the importance of randomized controlled trials, unique in their ability to provide relatively unbiased evidence of treatment effects.

2. Students will understand the most important issues relating to the design, analysis, conduct and ethical basis of randomized controlled trials.

3. Students will understand the roles and specific features of the following types of randomized controlled trials: pilot/feasibility trials, non-inferiority trials, participatory trials, multi-centre trials, large simple trials and cluster trials.

Teaching methods
The course textbook is Fundamentals of Clinical Trials 4th edition (Freidman, Furberg, DeMets, 2010). Supplemental lectures, RCT design papers and landmark clinical trial publications will also be used. There will be weekly content delivered via lectures, workshops and discussions with pre-assigned reading. Class time will be divided between content delivery, group activities and discussion of assigned reading materials. If there is interest, a follow-up reading course may be arranged to cover additional clinical trial topics such as Canadian regulatory requirements, recruitment strategies, data collection and management systems and budget preparation and justification.
Contact Dr. Kelly by email if you wish to complete additional online training in Good Clinical Practice or Health Canada Division 5 (Food and Drug Regulations on Clinical Trials involving Human Participants).
