October 22, 2019 - 13:30 - 14:30

Description

Causal Mediation: A Conceptual Overview and Demonstration

Speaker: Mr. Brenden Dufault, Biostatistician, Centre for Healthcare Innovation

October 22, 2019
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
A315, 3rd Floor, Chown Building, University of Manitoba

It is often of interest to know not only whether an exposure or treatment has an effect, but to also understand the mechanisms through which it acts. Scientifically, we wish to understand how nature works. Pragmatically, understanding these mechanisms allows us to design appropriate interventions. Causal mediation analysis aims to uncover these pathways using tools from recent advances in causal modeling.

This talk will offer an introduction to direct and indirect natural effects; discuss the limitations of common statistical approaches such as SEM; show the conditions in which mediation is identifiable; and walk through an example in R or SAS. Prior knowledge of basic concepts in causal modeling is assumed.
