Systematic Review Course

Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Course
(In association with Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba)

Summary: The need for systematic reviews and meta-analyses as a means of synthesizing and reporting heath related knowledge has never been greater. In this course, we will give you the tools to conduct, and interpret systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Course Objectives:

1. To recognize what a systematic review is, the types of systematic reviews and their purpose, and how systematic reviews are used in health care decision making
2. To learn how to plan, conduct and report a systematic review and how to perform a meta-analysis
3. To complete a systematic review including a systematic review protocol and a final manuscript

Course Format: Through a series of interactive seminars, this course is structured to guide you through the process of systematically reviewing and meta-analyzing the evidence (from topic development to publication of the results). Each seminar will be interactive, based on assigned readings and will be tailored to the challenges facing course participants through each stage of the review process.

Target audience: Clinicians, researchers, policy-makers and anyone interested in learning how to systematically review the evidence and meta-analyse results. Community Health Science students require permission of the instructor and advisor approval, while others require only permission of the instructor prior to registering.

KT Seminars

Manitoba has officially been recognized as a Knowledge Translation (KT) Node by KT Canada. Linkages with this national organization will provide a wide range of opportunities for collaboration as well as training and funding opportunities for investigators and trainees in the KT field.

As part of their mandate, KT Canada has developed and hosted the first, expert-led seminar series dedicated to current and emerging topics in KT, the KT Canada Seminar Series. All session materials are available at the KT Clearinghouse site.

Leadership Program

CHI has launched the third Academic Health Sciences Leadership Program with the goal of identifying and developing future leaders within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. The focus is on developing skills to assist individuals to prepare for leadership roles while understanding the dynamics of the healthcare system and academic environment. The aim is to develop critical, creative and lateral thinking individuals who can lead an academic health sciences unit while fostering organizational growth, learning and innovation.

The program will be delivered by senior leaders in the Faculty of Medicine and the Winnipeg Health Region who will lead active discussion groups and mentor participants in the development of a capstone project in an area of leadership relevant to the participant’s workplace or sphere of influence.
