Dr. Pingzhao Hu's award-winning project was highlighted at the Western Canadian Universities Big Data Health Conference (WCUC) on Precision Medicine and Big Data. The collaborative project seed funding was awarded by the WCUC. The funding is a partnership between the universities of British Columbia, Alberta, Calgary, Saskatchewan,and Manitoba with the intention to fund up to four cross-jurisdiction collaborative research projects (one project per participating sponsor University). The funded project should align with the strategic research priority - The Future of Precision Health and Big Data. Each project is awarded up to $20,000 for two years.

Dr. Hu's project entitled "Genome-wide diet-gene interaction analysis for risk of psychiatric co-morbidity in inflammatory bowel disease" is a collaboration with  University of Alberta, University of  Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba. The goal is to evaluate how dietary factors that interact with genetic variants to modulate the risk of psychiatric co-morbidity in inflammatory bowel disease. The co-investigators of the project include: Dr. Charles Bernstein (Manitoba), Dr. Linglong Kong (Alberta) and Dr. longhai Li (Saskatchewan).
