This workshop series will introduce participants to R by providing instruction and hands on exercises. Participants will leave with an understanding of basics in R including data manipulation, graphics, and programming.

Workshop dates are: June 20, June 22, June 27, June 29 at 9:30 - 11:30 am

The learning objectives are:

  • Introduce R – why use it, user interface (R Studio), and basic data structures
  • Overview of data management techniques
  • Learn elementary graphic functions for data visualization
  • Learn how to import and export datasets
  • Understand introductory R programming

Presenters are CHI Data Sciences'

  • Kristine Kroeker
  • Allison Feely
  • Dennis Bayomi

Session 1: R Basics

This session will introduce R and the R studio user interface. R data types and objects will be discussed with an emphasis on working with vectors and matrices.

Session 2: Basic Data Management in R

This session will begin with an introduction to data frames. Basic data management techniques will be explored, including creating variables, recoding missing values, and merging and subsetting data frames. Simple descriptive statistics will also be discussed.

Session 3: Introduction to Graphics in R

This session will introduce how to display data using basic graphics in R, including scatterplots, bar plots, histograms and boxplots. How to install and use R packages will also be discussed and there will be a brief demonstration on the data visualization options that are possible with the R package ggplot2.

Session 4: Introduction to Programming in R

This session will introduce basic programming constructs in R (i.e. iteration and conditional statements), as well as how to create functions. How to test and debug R code will also be discussed. This session will also emphasize ideal program design and etiquette (e.g. naming conventions and commenting).

Intended Audience

This workshop is intended for individuals with very little or no experience with the R software. Previous programming experience with other software would be an asset, but not required.
