Description


Strategies and methods for community-based research differ from those used in conventional research. Depth and process are emphasized. Illustrations and examples of participatory and/or arts-based methods will be discussed. These projects tend to privilege the experiences and ideas of those have knowledge to share and can lead to fulfilling and stimulating community projects.

Presenter:

Dr. Tuula Heinonen is a Professor with the Faculty of Social Work, University of Manitoba. She holds a Doctorate of Philosophy from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, a Master of Social Work degree from McGill University and an Advanced Diploma in Art Therapy from Vancouver Art Therapy Institute.  Among her research interests are;  cultural factors shaping active aging and well-being, well-being and challenges in settlement process of newcomers in Winnipeg, social work in health and aging, qualitative research and the use of the arts in human services, education and inquiry.
